The 14th International Hypoxia Symposium was held at the Chateau Lake Louise in the heart of Banff National Park during the week of the full moon from February 22 to 27, 2005. For many attendees, this year's meeting was a delightful homecoming of sorts. Although the venue of the first Hypoxia Symposium in 1979 was the elegant Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, the subsequent biennial meetings moved to idyllic Chateau Lake Louise for the next nine gatherings. Over this two-decade period, the Lake Louise and its surrounding peaks became almost synonymous in hearts and minds with the symposium, but for logistical and financial reasons, we were compelled to migrate up and down along the Trans-Canada Highway from Jasper to Banff over the last 6 years. I believe our return to Lake Louise, in addition to the exciting research and old and new friendships, surely helped to contribute to a widespread feeling that this year's meeting was the best ever. The meeting was dedicated to John T. "Jack" Reeves, a beloved member of the Hypoxia community (more of which later), who died last fall in a bicycle accident still in his irrepressible prime.
