As a group, franchisees were about as prepared for the economic storm as could be reasonably expected, but few foresaw just how bad the situation ended up getting. The franchising segment is on a slow path to recovery, with franchisors and franchisees setting aside their oft-differing agendas to find ways to trim operational costs without impacting the guest experience. So long as service scores do not suffer, franchisors have proven quite willing to delay cosmetic investment requirements in the name of short-term economic viability. However, hotel companies' patience may be close to running out.
