Emphasis on what other employers are paying (external equity) during periods of high inflation not only meansrnall employers must be more concerned with what other employers are paying for a particular job; it also means,rnfor the company that has a carefully structured relationship between its jobs, the end of that relationship.rnAn employer may, for example, have set up its pay structure by evaluating all its jobs, then lining them up inrnascending order of importance (and, of course, ascending order of pay). Each grade, in other words, rises arnmeasured amount above the grade before. In a period of inflation, this relationship is often destroyed becausernas management follows the salaries other employers are paying, it may see the average pay for engineers, forrnexample, rise faster than the pay for attorneys. Originally, the employer may have assigned attorneys to Grade 7rnand engineers to Grade 6. But as engineers' pay rises nationwide, Grade 6 may soon overtake Grade 7.
