For each day, up to a maximum of 90, in any "benefit period" (see 3981) that a covered individual is a patient in a hospital in 2009, basic Medicare (Part A) will pay for all hospital costs, excluding the following deductions:rn1. the inpatient hospital deductible amount (payable once per spell of illness) $1,068rn2. daily inpatient hospital coinsurance amounts (for days 61-90) $267rn3. daily charge for 60 lifetime reserve days (available after the 90th day) $534rnExample: Mr. Brown is hospitalized for 70 days in 2009. He pays the inpatient hospital deductible of $1,068 for the first day. There is no further charge for the first 60 days. Beginning on the 61st day, he must pay $267 per day.rnIf Mr. Brown returns to the hospital in the same benefit period, he will begin on his 71st day and must continue to pay $267 per day. If he stays beyond 90 days, he must either use his lifetime reserve days (and pay $534 per day) or he must pay all the per-day charges.rnCovered services. Covered "hospital costs" include those for bed and board in two-to four-bed rooms (or in a private room, if the individual's condition requires use of a private room), nursing services (except private-duty nursing), the usual drugs and supplies furnished hospital patients, and other diagnostic or therapeutic services furnished inpatients by the hospital, or under arrangements made by the hospital.
