Medicare Part A covers hospice care for beneficiaries who are terminally ill and who are diagnosed as having a life expectancy of six months or less. Most services provided by a hospice are covered, including the services of staff doctors. The services of the beneficiary's private doctor (if the doctor is not on the hospice's staff) are paid separately under Part B. If the patient lives longer than six months, additional periods are covered if the prognosis remains the same.rnTo be eligible for hospice care, a beneficiary must elect to receive hospice care instead of most other Medicare benefits. Covered hospice benefits include nursing care, various therapies, medical social services, homemaker-home health aide services, medical supplies and appliances, drugs and biologicals, staff physicians' services, short-term inpatient care, respite care, and patient counseling.rnFor hospice care, there is a 5-percent coinsurance for each respite care day, and the lesser of a 5-percent or a $5 coinsurance on drugs and biologicals.
