Sustainability has been a critical issue in the hydropower industry for the past 10 years. Reflecting this focus, the International Hydropower Association (IHA) has been leading work on sustainability definition and measurement through the multi-stakeholder Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Forum, arriving at completion of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol in November 2010.' This protocol was the result of a work program lasting nearly three years.
