When personnel with Furnas Centrais Eletricas S.A. began modernizing the 1,216-MW Furnas plant, they discovered damage to Unit 6 caused by alkali-aggregate reaction. The bottom stationary wearing ring was out of round, and the wicket gate stems were out of alignment. The plant owner and contractor worked together to design and implement an on-site machining effort to bring the unit back into alignment.
