摘要

This paper very broadly establishes an overview of one of the largest survey projects in the world to date. The interest from a number of other countries has made those involved in Ireland realise that a lot of new ground is being covered owing to the scale of the project. A question often asked is 'why survey the whole area?' Besides the obvious UNCLOS requirement and inshore navigation requirements there are a number of good scientific motivations for this baseline platform. The discovery of the deep-water corals has raised a lot of interest, not only from the oceanographic community but even from medical researchers. The gravity and magnetic data is very important in the search for energy resources. The cable industry is particularly focused on the Porcupine Seabight, which offers a far less hazardous approach to Europe for trans-Atlantic cables. The list grows continuously and the GSI is constantly searching for new initiatives and participants in this exciting project. A number of innovations have already been brought to the project and therefore this Journal will be utilised to publish more specific interests in the near future. Details of the ongoing project are loaded regularly on the GSI and MI websites at www.gsiseabed.ie and www.marine.ie respectively. Finally Figure 7 details previously undiscovered mounds, which were named, in Gaelic, after Dr Ray Keary.
