It starts every October. The forecasters become prophets of doom, solemnly warning of the dreaded "chance of icing in clouds and precipitation" day in and day out, without fail, as you begin to wonder whether the phrase is on a rubber stamp that is whapped onto every document at the NOAA from then until the end of April. Let's make it clear up front, a "chance of icing" is legally considered to be "known icing." However, you've flown enough to know that when those "chance of icing" warnings are given, the vast majority of the sky will be ice-free, and as with the little boy who cried wolf, you who fly in the northern climes soon find yourself ignoring the "chance of warnings and proceed to seek hard information about the true risk of ice, not editorial comment, before making decisions as to whether to proceed aloft.
