North Carolina lost 72,000 manufacturing jobs between 2002 and 2003, but innovative companies such as Glen Raven Inc., Glen Raven, N.C., have staged a big recovery, according to a September 3 article in the Washington Post. The company manufactures specialty fabrics requiring high-tech equipment and technical expertise, and exported $52 million in textiles and fabrics to China-perceived by many as a threat to the U.S. textile industry.
