This overview identifying varying levels of combustible dust related fires and explosions will hopefully assist stakeholders in understanding the control measures required to reduce probability and severity of future incidents. Level 1 incidents are the most prevalent; in many instances not reported in media accounts due to their non-consequential nature. Recognizing the ability of a Level 1 layer fire to escalate rapidly into a catastrophic flash fire or dust explosion is the first step in averting harm to personnel and property Prevention measures controlling elements of the fire triangle minimise the possibility of an explosion pentagon manifesting.
