Many of you will be unfamiliar with these special AR foams. Until recently all AR type foams used a water soluble polymer added to the foam concentrate. This is distributed in every bubble and as the foam is gently applied to the polar solvent the first bubbles touching the fuel collapse, leaving this polymer raft or flexible 'skin' behind as a protective barrier . This barrier prevents dehydration of the bubbles above, allowing a foam blanket to build up and provide progressive and controlled extinction. The downside of most AR foams is that this water soluble polymer makes the concentrate thicker to use which varies with different brands, but can be anything from runny honey to wallpaper paste in consistency This has a significant impact on proportioning systems, usually requiring re-calibration and sometimes re-piping to avoid severe under-induction.
