摘要

In Infinite Distraction, Dominic Pettman has written an unashamedly polemic and at times witty book which provides an explanation for both the appeal and the effect of the distractions sought and provided by social media. Using Facebook, Tinder, Twitter and Instagram as his examples, he deploys the writings of thinkers from before the social media age to provide the reader with a theoretical framework from which to assess this 'digitization of distraction' (p. ix). Freud, Baudrillard, Fromm, Heidegger, Durkheim and Weil all feature, as does more recent empirical research about the use of social media.
