Common sense and scholarly conceptions of emotions tend to make us think of feelings as interior to individuals and as somehow beyond the social. Ian Burkitt's new book is a marvellous antidote to reductionist and overly psychologized models of emotion. From it emerges an account of the complex and profoundly social nature of emotions, as they are produced and reproduced in relating to and communicating with others.
