People thrive when they have a strong sense of community. The desire to communicate and spend time with others who have similar interests is natural, but socializing can be difficult and dangerous during a pandemic. Quarantine Buddy provides a free, unique solution to this problem. Just answer a few questions on the website, and you can find an online buddy to spend time with. Feelings of isolation were a problem in the U.S. even before the pandemic hit. The health insurance company Cigna issued a January 2020 report finding that "America's loneliness epidemic is getting worse, with three in five adults (61%) reporting they are lonely, a seven percentage-point increase from 2018." The Quarantine Buddy platform was developed by Sam Brickman, Jordyn Goldzweig, and Alisa Lai, three computer science majors from Cornell University. Before that, they created Zing, a platform that matches students who have similar classes, schedules, and interests. Once states started closing down due to COVID-19 outbreaks, the three realized that Zing's technology could be adapted for another use. They redesigned Zing's machine-learning algorithm to serve the needs of anyone struggling with isolation.
