Welcome to my new column! This is a space where we will hear from colleagues on topics regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Info pros think hard about the meaning of information, what we do with it, and how it is interpreted. We like to believe that we are impartial. Today, we are examining ourselves and our profession even more closely for signs of bias. Teresa Helena Moreno, a librarian at the University of Illinois-Chicago, is considering the intersection of diaspora and information to better understand how we interpret and provide access. Before becoming a librarian, Moreno was a teacher and administrator at several universities. She holds degrees in gender/women's studies and English, as well as library science. She has taught a wide variety of college-level courses, including gender studies, Black studies, and politics of information. She is currently the undergraduate engagement coordinator at the University of Illinois-Chicago Library, where she co-leads a team that's creating a social justice and critical theory praxis-infused undergraduate engagement program. She is completing a book, Everywhere and Nowhere: Understanding Diaspora in the Library, to be published by Library Juice Press in 2021.1 spoke with her about her research and what it means for our industry.
