Did Hillary Clinton come under sniper fire in Bosnia, or not? Did Barack Obama claim that John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq, or not? Does McCain know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites, or not? In each case, a presidential candidate made a firm statement that was later shown to be wrong, ignorant, or perhaps both. These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. We often hear about how a politician's words were "misinterpreted" or "taken out of context." But during this presidential campaign season, there seem to be more misstatements. In fact, campaign lies are so common that you might say, "They all do it. What difference does it make?" The answer is that it does make a difference. We act on the lies, through our answers to pollsters' questions and our votes. Our "assent" then leads to results that we desperately do not want.
