Access is the name of our game. Regardless of our specific role within the information community―database producer, traditional print publisher, librarian, or consumer―we all share the same goal of increasing knowledge through information access. Legally speaking, the U.S. Supreme Court has held that information access is an integral part of the First Amendment's right to free speech. "The right to receive ideas," the court said, is part of the "recipient's meaningful exercise of his own rights of speech, press, and political freedom." Whether our motive is freedom of speech or freedom to make a profit, the more people who can access the information products and services we offer, the better.
