When Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition scored a decisive victory in elections held in mid-July, it marked another important milestone in his battle to fix the country's moribund economy. The Liberal Democratic Party, headed by Abe, already had a majority in Japan's lower house. Now it will also control the upper house, giving the prime minister unprecedented powers to push through his ambitious reform agenda. That's good news for a country which has seen 15 leaders in little more than 20 years. It is also likely to raise investor confidence in Abe's reforms at a time when some of the toughest economic measures will need to be implemented.
