I spent two years working in Canada in the 1960s and realized that France was a small country and that globalization was inevitable. When I became chief executive of Ancienne Mutuelle in 1975, we ranked No. 15 among insurance groups in France. I aimed to strengthen our position in the domestic market and then expand internationally. I was inspired by the book Managing for Results, by American Peter Drucker. He talked about the importance of seizing opportunities.
