Since the beginning of the Republic, public investing in transportation, infrastructure and education have played a central role in advancing the U.S. economy. The massive canals of upstate New York, the railroads that linked the heartland to our industrial centers, the land grant colleges that opened education to average Americans and the G.I. Bill that made education basic to American life — all were the result of major investments financed by the federal and state governments over the past century and a half. We need to make similar investments now.
