When he was recruited to be chief financial officer of Roche Group nearly five years ago, Erich Hunziker faced a daunting task. Sales at the Swiss drug company were stagnating and profits were falling sharply, but the company's internal financial reporting was so primitive that executives couldn't measure financial returns by product. Hunziker promptly set about implementing new controls and installing IT systems that shed clear light on the Basel-based company's operations. Costs and sales were broken down to an unprecedented level of detail, allowing managers for the first time to measure profit after taxes and capital investment by each product. That information prompted the company to sell its slow-growing fine chemicals and vitamins division in 2002 and its over-the-counter medicines business in 2004.
