摘要

In The Making of Terrorism in Pakistan, Eamon Murphy sets out to establish that violent extremism in Pakistan is not driven by religion but rather by social, economic, political and historical factors. It is a crucial issue that underlies much of the current debate about the 'war on terror'. How one analyses militants' motivations has a direct bearing on policy issues in Western, Middle Eastern North African and South Asian capitals. If the underlying causes of jihadist violence are social, economic and political in nature then the solutions presumably lie in foreign aid, poverty alleviation and other programmes and policies designed to ease the lot of those denied opportunities for advancement in their own societies. However, if the confrontation between violent jihadis and the West is ideological than the militarists on both sides have more scope to argue that the correct response is to use force to inflict a defeat on the enemy.
