摘要

Advances in computing technology continue to improve the recommendation quality from decision support systems (DSSs). Typically, recommendations from DSSs are communicated to a human decision maker who has the ultimate decision authority. It is imperative that DSS recommendations receive proper consideration to improve decision outcomes. The current research investigates how decision makers cognitively process evidence items. Also, order effects are analyzed to determine how decision makers align their decisions with DSS recommendations depending upon when in a sequence system recommendations are presented. Results from two laboratory experiments suggest that continuous streams of evidence are processed as short series of evidence items. Constraining evidence item analysis to a single question failed to reduce complexity. In the experiments, people aligned their decisions with the system's decision most frequently when the system's decision was displayed last in a sequence, indicating a recency effect.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTSOrder effects are biases that cause people to place more weight on evidence depending on when that evidence is presented.Decision support system workflows can be constructed to present recommendations before or after independent evidence reviews leading to order effects.People treat evidence with no clear delineation between items as a short series of evidence.Constraining evidence analysis to a single question does not reduce evidence complexity.Decision support system recommendations are accepted more often when presented after an independent review of evidence, indicating a recency effect.
