The year 2003 was flat in terms of overall launch activity (62 launches, one more than in the previous year) but saw two significant developments, as the USA moved ahead of Russia in the number of launches for the first time since 1999, and China "out-launched" Europe for the first time ever. It was a year of mixed fortunes, starting with the Columbia disaster, but culminating in China's first manned space-flight and the successful arrival of NASA's first Mars rover, Spirit, on the surface of the Red Planet, along with Europe's Mars Express orbiter. With a total of five vehicles now studying Mars ― the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on the surface, and three platforms in orbit (Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey and Mars Express) ― the Red Planet is bound to hog the headlines over the coming year. However, a number of other planetary missions will take significant steps forward in the months ahead.
