Consistent with studies focusing on intra-household bargaining mechanisms and family composition, this research reports a preference for sons in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) households. The preference is observed both in terms of their overall health level and the health benefits derived from participation in WIC. The program is part of the United States social safety net and is designed to safeguard the health of particularly vulnerable groups, including pregnant and recently postpartum women, infants, and children under the age of five who are nutritionally or medically at risk and living in low-income homes. To this end the program provides participants with access to foods rich in the vitamins and minerals that are essential for their healthy growth and development, recommendations for health care services, nutrition counseling, and educational programming. Despite the targeted nature of the program, recent evidence indicates that the health and nutrition benefits of WIC are not always fully attributed to the active participant (Basiotis, Kramer-LeBlanc et al., Family Economics and Nutrition Review, 1998; Ver Ploeg, Journal of Family and Economic Issues, 2009; Woodward and Ribar, Food and Nutrition Sciences, 2012; Robinson, Journal of Family and Economic Issues, 2013).
