摘要

According the Royal Malaysian Navy, it is a known fact that the Straits of Malacca (SOM) are the busiest straits in the world, as well as a choke point that provides vital lifelines to East Asian nations. Over 90,000 vessels pass through the Straits every year; around 30% of world trade and 50% of world energy needs to pass through the straits each year. The number of vessels passing through the straits has increased by about 25% in the last 20 years and it is projected to increase to around 141,000 vessels in 2020. It is also a fact that the issues regarding maritime security in the SOM are very complex. Prevailing threats in the straits encompass a wide spectrum of issues from minor theft incidents in harbour, armed robberies and piracies at sea, environmental pollution, drugs and human trafficking and even potential maritime terrorism. It is against this backdrop that the LIMA'13 Chiefs of Navy Roundtable Talk platform yesterday was an opportunity for the region's Navy Chiefs to discuss and debate maritime regional issues.
