The path from the first exposition of heliocentrism in Copernicus' De Revo-lutionibus Orbium Coelestium (1543) to a detailed presentation of celestial mechanics in Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica (1687) was long, torturous and sometimes capricious. The division between the sublunary sphere and the superlunary sphere that characterized the Aristotelian cosmos had to be replaced, and this was undertaken on the assumption that celestial and terrestrial phenomena are subjected to the same laws of nature. There was not one single answer to this challenge but, on the contrary, we find a rich variety of often contrasting, if not incompatible, proposals about the foundations of the new mechanics.
