摘要

A new type of battery that can store solar or other light-sourced energy in chemical bonds rather than electrons, enabling it to release the energy on demand as heat instead of electricity, is being developed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA. Previous high ener- gy storage density achieved in a polymeric system was in the range of 200 J/g, while the new system is able to reach an average of 510 J/g, up to a maximum of 690 J/g. Applications for the new technology include solar panels allowing for the release of energy in the form of heat for cooking, and warming living spaces, clothing or blankets.
