China's Three Gorges plant has recaptured the world record for annual hydropower production from the Itaipu powerplant on the border of Brazil and Paraguay. The 22 500 MW plant, on the Yangtze river, generated 98.8 TWh of electricity in 2014, its owner-operator, the Three Gorges Dam Corporation, announced on 1 January, exceeding the 96.63 TWh recorded by the 14 000 MW Itaipu plant in 2013 (see H&D Issue One 2014). Itaipu, on the Parana river, is the world's second largest hydro capacity plant.
