I am delighted to have the opportunity to address these few words to Hydropower & Dams readers, and I would like to thank Alison Battle for providing this possibility. This special publication of Hydropower & Dams is devoted to current developments in Africa, and especially some key papers and communications which had been submitted for the AFRICA 2015 Conference, co-organized by Aqua～Media International and ICOLD. Unfortunately, and according to the well known proverb which says "Man proposes and God disposes", the AFRICA 2015 Conference, scheduled to be held in March this year in Marrakech, had to be postponed to March 2017 because of the threat of the Ebola virus, which hit West Africa resulting in a dramatic loss of lives and assets in the region. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep condolences and solidarity to all who lost wives, husbands, children and parents, and to all the countries which have suffered and continue to suffer from this epidemic.
