The Government of Alberta, Canada, has appointed a minister with a portfolio for renewable energy, the first such position of its kind in the country. Coinciding with the news, the Pembina Institute, which welcomed the appointment, issued a report saying that Alberta's sustainable electricity resources could replace coal in 20 years, even if demand doubled over that period. It notes that 25 per cent of Alberta's greenhouse gas emissions are associated with electricity generation, and that electricity generation produces 80 per cent of Alberta's airborne mercury pollution and 30 per cent of its acid rain. Also, thermal power-plants draw the highest volume of water in Alberta after irrigation. About 4 per cent of the water allocated for cooling is not returned to its watershed.
