Two further units at the Dniester pumped-storage plant in Ukraine were connected to the grid on 24 October, at a ceremony attended by the country's President, Petro Poroshenko. The commissioning of units 3 and 4, with a combined capacity of 648 MW in the generating mode and 842 MW in the pumping mode, doubles the project's installed capacity. Poroshenko said that the construction of the plant would enhance Ukraine's energy independence, and making it less dependent on Russian gas. The two units will result in estimated annual savings of between US$ 270 and 310 million by reducing the consumption of coal, oil and gas at the country's thermal power stations, according to Igor Syrota, the Director-General of Ukrhydroener-go, the developer and state-owned operator of the country's largest hydro plants.
