Macedonia plans to invest around €324 million in the development of new hydropower capacity between 2012 and 2016, according to the first draft of a national programme for the implementation of the country's energy strategy published in July by the Ministry of Economy.Just over a third of the total planned investments in the country's energy sector, or around €467 million, are to be carried out by the country's state-owned power producer ELEM, including €154 mil- lion for the construction of new hydropower plants and €188 million for the modernization of existing thermal and hydro plants. A further €400 million is to be invested though public-private partnerships, including €170 million in new hydropower capacity.
