Studies have confirmed the technical and economic feasibility of the 480 MW Sopladora scheme, whichrnwill be the next stage of the major Paute development in Ecuador. Various challenging features of the site,rndesign options which were considered and those eventually adopted, are discussed here.rnAt the end of May 2009, the Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (CELEC SA) will call for a public tender, with funding, for construction of the Sopladora hydropower plant. CELEC is the concessionary of the Integrated Paute Hydropower Complex (see Fig. 1), which comprises four projects: Mazar (163 MW), Molino (1075 MW), Sopladora (487 MW) and Cardenillo (500 MW). All are, or will be, located on the Paute river, in the southwest of Ecuador, about 100 km from Cuenca City. Basic designs ready for the call for tenders have been carried out by a consortium of consulting engineers, comprising Leme (Brazil), Caminosca (Ecuador), Coyne et Bellier (France) and MN (Chile). The designs had to take into account a number of significant technical challenges, which are described in this article.
