The new back up berm recently completed immediately downstream of the Saluda dam in South Carolina, USA, contains 990 400 m~3 of RCC, 79 000 m~3 of conventional concrete, and 2.5 x 10~6m~3of rock. Contractor, Barnard Construction Company Inc had previously completed the trial sections for the project using Aran continuous mixing plants, operated by a sub-contractor. During the bid preparation for the main dam project, Barnard engineers investigated various options for cooling and mixing the RCC, including use of the large tower-type batch plants with ice cooling as used at Olivenhain dam. According to M. Killian of Barnard, the combination of modern Aran Modumix II-3 continuous mixing plants and a continuous cooling system, offered by Coldcrete Inc, offered advantages compared with conventional batch plants on both capital and unit mixing cost. The choice allowed Barnard to be very competitive and to build a high quality dam efficiently and to schedule. Savings on foundations, erection and demobilization, and wear costs compared with batch plant alternatives were substantial, Killian said.
