In recent years, there has been growing alarm over the state of graduate education in the sciences. Graduates complain loudly of a lack of career opportunities in the areas of academic research for which they were trained. Employers, on the other hand, complain that students are ill prepared for the work available to them. The U.S. system of graduate education in science and engineering is one of the nation's great strengths. It has served as an international model for preparing young scientists to work at the cutting edge of research. But changes in the ways science and engineering are conducted and funded are exerting stress on the traditional system of graduate education.
