Almost every speaker underlined that basic telecommunications have changed radically. Broadband internet access over very high-speed digital subscriber lines (xDSL) has given a new lease of life to aging copper loops. And with the introduction of third-generation (3G, or IMT-2000) mobile services, as well as the onslaught of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and other new technologies, competition for market share is intense. The pace of change is so rapid that maintaining an integrated environment has become a big challenge for standardization efforts.
