By most indicators 2016 was a year of further decline for the security environment in Afghanistan. Although estimates vary, most analysts agree that the Afghan government lost ground to the Taliban in 2016 and the country's security is likely to worsen over 2017. In December 2016 US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander General Joseph L Votel estimated that the Afghan government controlled only 60% of the country, with 10% controlled by the Taliban and 30% contested. Meanwhile, US force levels are set to be reduced from 9,800 to 8,400 by February 2017, pending a further decision from President Donald Trump about the future of US policy in Afghanistan.
