South Korea's government is looking to "sharply" increase its defence budget, a member of the country's ruling Saenuri Party revealed on 27 August. Reuters reported that legislator Kim Sung-tae had said the government was expecting to bolster combat power at the border with North Korea and increase funding for anti-submarine warfare systems. However, Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan said that in addition to increasing defence expenditure the government would also be increasing funding to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) peace park and re-establishing the rail link between Seoul and the North Korean port ofWonsan.
