Norway intends to increase its defence budget by 12% in 2016, according to the country's new draft budget released on 7 October. Total defence expenditure is expected to increase by NOK5.2 billion (USD0.8 billion) to reach NOK49.1 billion. Under the increase planned for 2016, the Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) budget will grow to 1.5% of GDP, up from 1.4% in 2015. The 10% real-term boost is largely attributable to increased short-term funding increases for the F-35 programme, the budget for which is expected to double to NOK8.8 billion (USD1.4 billion) in 2016. Further to the 22 F-35 fighters scheduled for delivery between 2015 and 2019, the 2016 budget proposes an additional 6 aircraft to be delivered in 2020.
