Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has been awarded a contract to build the first two 3,000-tonne submarines for the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN), the company said in a statement in late December 2012. Under the KSS-III (also known as KSS-3) programme, up to nine of the large conventional submarines are expected to be procured. Design of South Korea's first homegrown submarine began in 2007 and involved DSME and Hyundai Heavy Industries.
