The Syrian government has denied chemical weapons (CW) were used in the Damascus area on 21 August, while its allies Russia and Iran have blamed opposition elements. The chemical attacks were allegedly carried out in opposition-controlled areas on the outskirts of the capital in the early morning of 21 August and coincided with shelling and bombing by the Syrian military. Videos were released throughout the day showing dozens of corpses and casualties suffering symptoms associated with various CW agents. Fatality estimates varied wildly between 130 and 1,300.
