India is in advanced negotiations with Russia, its principal materiel supplier, to lease a second Schuka-B ('Akula')-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) for 10 years. Indian Navy (IN) sources said the USD 1.5 billion leasing of the SSN, which they expect to include design elements of the latest Yasen-class (also known as the 'Severodinsk'-class) SSGNs, featured in discussions on defence co-operation between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Vladamir Putin in Moscow on 21 October. More than 60% of India's military hardware is of Soviet or Russian origin.
