Boeing is promoting special mission variants of its 737-based P-8 Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft as cheaper and more capable replacements for many of the legacy 707- and Lockheed Martin C-130-based platforms in service around the world, a senior company official said on 8 June. Bob Feldmann, Vice President and General Manager for Surveillance and Engagement at Boeing Defense and Security (BDS), told reporters at the company's Puget Sound facility near Seattle that, with 41 million flight hours flown by the 737 to date and nearly 400 new airliners rolling off the Renton production line each year, there is a "tremendous and compelling case" for leveraging this industrial base in recapitalising legacy 707/C-130 special mission fleets.
