China's top general on 11 July warned Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, that the US military was too big and should stay out of the South China Sea territorial dispute. Adm Mullen, who was in China on a four-day visit to improve bilateral military ties that have thawed since the beginning of 2011, was chided by General Chen Bingde, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chief of the General Staff, for the US 11-day military exercise with the Philippines close to the disputed Spratly Islands.
