US defence officials are revitalising efforts to replace combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) helicopters after Secretary of Defense Robert Gates cancelled the USAF's CSAR-X acquisition programme last year.rnThe US Department of Defense (DoD) and the US Air Force (USAF) conducted a study in mid-2009 that validated the need for more aircraft to complete the CSAR mission. Defence officials are now working on a strategy to help this programme move forward, Lieutenant General Mark Shackelford, Military Deputy, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, said on 23 February.
