The German government is taking measures to cut costs where possible in order to reduce its federal debt and consolidate the budget, with particularly severe consequences for defence.rnThe constitutionally mandatory 'debt brake' will be applied for the first time in 2011. While it was expected that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Bundeswehr itself would be affected by budget cuts, the most recent development was not anticipated by even the most pessimistic observers.
