Kazakhstan intends to build its defence industry by encouraging foreign defence companies to set up joint ventures in the country.rnThe strategy is designed to acquire technology transfers with an aim of initially making higher-quality products for Kazakhstan's own armed forces and subsequently developing an export business.rnSeveral foreign companies are already in the process of forming joint ventures with Kazakh partners, and the ministry of defence (MoD) put on the country's first defence expo - KADEX 2010, held from 26-29 May at the military airfield in Astana - in large part to encourage such collaboration. Kazakhstan inherited several state-ownedrndefence companies following the collapse of the Soviet Union, but their export potential now is negligible. However, over the coming decade the country hopes to develop export-worthy products such as armoured vehicles, artillery, radios and various C4ISR systems, electronic warfare systems, radars, simulators, unmanned aerial vehicles and even ships displacing up to 1,000 tons, said Ratmit Komratov, executive director of Kazakhstan Engineering: the holding company that controls all state-owned defence enterprises.
