President Barack Obama will delay the submission of the 2010 United States defence budget request, possibly until April, it has emerged. The request is usually submitted in February; however, the new administration believes it needs more time to carry out a substantial review of the submission. Speaking on 27 January, the chair of the senate armed services committee, Carl Levin, said that he is expecting a second 2009 emergency supplemental in the next few weeks. The administration is required by law to submit a preliminary 2010 budget request on the first Monday in February. However, "the more meaningful submission will be the amended budget request reflecting the priorities of the new administration, which is expected in April", Levin said.
